As sportsmen we should all get along and protect the rights we have. Who are you to tell someone it’s wrong or should be outlawed if they grew up doing it and enjoy it. Here still hunters have a month and a half longer season then the dog hunters so I see it as fair.Īll that being said if you don't enjoy it don't do it. I would think if dogs were in the area it would make the deer move increasing your odds. I would be willing to bet that if you were still hunting and the dogs ran a big buck by you, you would shoot it. There are ways to make the sport safer don't just jump to wanting to outlaw deer dogs totally. Maybe there should be specified deer dog hunting days on public land. Running deer dogs on public land doesn't sound like a good idea to many people that don't know where everyone else is. I often feel that one person can put a bad name on the whole practice but it can be safely done.Īs for the girl riding a horse on public land that got shot, did she have on orange? Was she aware hunting season was in? I know that she is not the one to blame but could there have been precautions taken by her that would have increased her safety. We use CBs to communicate which helps to ensure people are in correct spots. We have distance regulations that you can be of stands to ensure safety. There is a safe way to hunt deer with dogs and people just have to be taught the correct way to do it. That being said as a kid I was taught that if I wasn't sure it was safe to shoot DON'T SHOOT. The biggest problems that I have experienced with hunting with deer dogs is inexperienced hunters, hunters that are not part of an organized hunt but are next to or on property that an organized hunt is taking place, and lack of communication. The goal with that is to let the ones close to that size run for another day.Īccidental shootings do tend to occur every once in awhile but here thousands of hunters head to the woods opening day of season which increases the odds of an accident. You can judge a deer crossing a path being run by dogs. It is the OLD FASHIONED way to hunt deer in my eyes. Well here deer hunting with dogs is a way of life. The type of hunting your guys do sounds a lot more organized and safe than a bunch of rednecks with dogs riding up and down the road shooting just anything. Thank you for shedding some light on this subject. But I also always knew if I was shooting at a buck or a doe before I ever pulled the trigger. You learn how to shoot pretty fast sometimes. Most were being ran by beagles but some of them were in front of hounds. I've killed several that were in front of deer dogs. Shooting a deer being ran by dogs is a lot harder than you think.one really should do it successfully before bashing it. Maybe we should start wearing bullet proof vest to run deer dogs? They make safety harnesses for that, if u choose to use one. Report this post to a moderator | IP: Logged I know two guys that are in wheel chairs now due to falling out of trees while still hunting, maybe it should be outlawed. I hear about people falling out of tree stands all of the time though. We've had our club since 1960 and never have had anyone shot on a dog drive.
